A Tale of Two Successful Black Men
President Obama called out the Supreme Court for weakening the Voting Rights Act when he eulogized Congressman John Lewis. He called for its restoration as the John Lewis Voting Rights Act along with the end of gerrymandering and the filibuster.
The Voting Rights Act has been sitting on Mitch McConnell’s desk for over 200 days. This is the first time in history that it hasn’t been extended. It has always been nonpartisan but today’s Republican party is racist and does everything in its power to keep people of color from voting.
Obama reminded everybody that John Lewis was an ordinary American who stood up to the Status Quo by putting his life on the line to create a fuller, fairer and better America. He called upon all us to keep that going, “John Lewis — the first of the Freedom Riders, head of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, youngest speaker at the March on Washington, leader of the march from Selma to Montgomery, Member of Congress representing the people of this state and this district for 33 years, mentor to young people, including me at the time, until his final day on this Earth — he not only embraced that responsibility, but he made it his life’s work…..Spoke to a quarter million people at the March on Washington when he was just 23…..Helped organize the Freedom Summer in Mississippi when he was just 24….At the ripe old age of 25, John was asked to lead the march from Selma to Montgomery…..and the Voting Rights Act was signed into law…..Bull Connor may be gone. But today we witness with our own eyes police officers kneeling on the necks of Black Americans. George Wallace may be gone. But we can witness our federal government sending agents to use tear gas and batons against peaceful demonstrators. We may no longer have to guess the number of jellybeans in a jar in order to cast a ballot. But even as we sit here, there are those in power who are doing their darnedest to discourage people from voting — by closing polling locations, and targeting minorities and students with restrictive ID laws, and attacking our voting rights with surgical precision, even undermining the postal service in the runup to an election that is going to be dependent on mailed-in ballots so people don’t get sick……We are going to have to be more like John. We don’t have to do all the things he had to do because he did them for us. But we have got to do something.”
Obama made America cry.
John Lewis wrote an op-ed to be published upon his death where he encouraged all of us to pick up where he left off.
John Lewis made America cry.
Not to be outdone by John Lewis’ funeral, Trump threw a press conference together where he hung a giant banner behind him that read, “President Donald J. Trump — Operation Warp Speed” and boasted about having a vaccine for the coronavirus.
Trump made America cry.
Former Republican presidential candidate Herman Cain, one of Trump’s few Black supporters, died from the coronavirus after attending his MAGA rally in Tulsa. Co-founder of the conservative student group Turning Point USA, Bill Montgomery, has died from it, too. They both mocked wearing masks. The GOP is a Death Cult.
What are the two successful black men, John Lewis and Herman Cain, taking to their graves? John Lewis is taking a lifetime of selfless action and monumental, historical achievements along with the love and respect of an entire nation to his grave. Herman Cain is taking the love of his family and friends, and loyalty to a party that was never loyal to him, just his money. Money that he spent his lifetime making and hoarding but won’t be taking with him to his grave. A tale of two successful black men in America who took two very different only in America roads.
95 days until we get to vote, thanks in great part, to the Black man who took the high road. RIP John Lewis. You too, Herman Cain.
