Abortion: Dems Are Our Only Hope

Reminder: The Republicans have been campaigning on reversing Roe v Wade for 50 years. Ever since the Supreme Court ruled that women had a constitutional right to decide for herself whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term for privacy reasons, the Republicans have been promising to overturn that. It’s been an ideal way to keep their voters right where they want them, for decades. They created single issue voters that way and got a lot of Republicans elected over the years as a result. Then along came Trump and they got to use him to appoint 3 extremist Catholics to the Supreme Court who then joined the other 2 extremist Catholics to take a constitutional right away from women and make state governments in charge of their bodies, sex lives, sizes of their families, and their futures. Republicans are very excited about the prospect of outlawing abortion on a federal level if they take control of Congress next week. We can’t let that happen. Everybody show up to vote on Tuesday, November 8, and vote for Democrats up and down the ballot. Democrats believe that the government should stay out of our sex lives even if they personally are opposed to abortion.

As soon as the Supreme Court struck Roe v Wade down, the consequences of that draconian, medieval, barbaric, misogynistic, fascist decision was immediately felt. Little girls who had been raped by family members couldn’t get abortions in states who had already outlawed abortion. Women whose fertilized eggs got stuck in the fallopian tubes and never made it to the uterus were told by doctors that there wasn’t anything they could do so they’d have to either go to another state to get an abortion or die when the fetus grew too big in the wrong place in her body. Expectant mothers who were told that their developing fetus had horrible abnormalities and would die in utero or as soon as they were born were denied the option to abort and made to go through the trauma of seeing a pregnancy through to the end only to watch their baby suffer and die soon after. Same thing for women who miscarried. Doctors couldn’t remove the dead fetus because the states they practiced in made it a crime for them to do so, so they had to tell their patients they’d have to wait until her body expelled it “naturally.”

According to Republicans, fertilized eggs, guns and corporations are people but women are not.

Missouri has had plenty of heart-breaking scenarios since Republicans took control of pregnant women in the state. One pregnant woman called her Republican state senator to beg for help getting around the law that says she couldn’t have an abortion, and he sent her to an anti-abortion center. Another woman, who happened to be pro-life, needed an abortion after her water broke at 17 weeks or else she’d die. She went to Illinois to get life saving care and had to walk through a mob of protesters yelling at her that she was a baby killer. Brave Melissa Farmer went public with her abortion story by sharing it for an ad for the Democratic candidate for US Senate. The fetus had a fatal fetal abnormality that put her life at risk so she traveled out of state to get an abortion. The Republican running against the Democrat also happens to be the current attorney general of Missouri so he used his power to “investigate” her to help his campaign. He sent cease and desist letters to TV stations telling them to take down the ad and they refused. Republicans in Missouri have tried to pass legislation that would use the national guard to test women if they’re pregnant when they leave the state to prove that they were headed out to get an abortion so they could put them in jail.

Republican congressional candidate Bo Hines in North Carolina has proposed rape panels to decide if rape and incest victims should be allowed to get an abortion. Make her go through a “community review process.” Sort of like a jury of her peers — let her neighbors decide if she is guilty of sex without consent or not.

Republican Don Bolduc running against incumbent Maggie Hassan for senate in New Hampshire says women’s reproductive decisions should be left to Republican “gentleman” lawmakers. He believes that that decision belongs to the state. He is not only for outlawing abortion he’s against in vitro fertilization.

In Texas, a 35 year old woman who had finally conceived after a year and a half of fertility treatments nearly died of a bacterial infection after her 18 week fetus was no longer viable due to a condition with her cervix. The doctor couldn’t legally perform the abortion she required so she got sepsis and nearly died. She may no longer be able to get pregnant due to damage to her uterus caused by the government forcing the doctor to leave a dead fetus in a live woman.

Thanks to the Supreme Court, abortion is illegal in half of the country. If the Dems don’t win on Tuesday, it could be illegal in all of the country. President Biden has already said that if Democrats hold the House and elect 2 more Democratic senators they will suspend the filibuster and codify Roe v. Wade.

Election day is four days away. Show up and vote for Democrats, no excuses!
