Spike is a lefty Boomer (on the cusp of Gen X) living in Los Angeles. She’s an acrylic painter and cartoonist who used to express her political and societal angst on paper or canvas until Trump came along. Then it wasn’t a weekly or semi-weekly trip to the studio or drawing board but an every day, all day, breaking news, run on panic attack. Her angst ran over the edges in images on to other pages. It was too much. So she took up blogging so she could fit it all on one page. She started after Trump’s inauguration by yelling at Trump voters, “LOOK WHAT YOU’VE DONE!” but that rant quickly turned into an ongoing documentation of the Trump administration and the Republicans party’s daily crimes. She has captured it all (one million words and counting.) Since she mixes the news with a little satire and dark humor when appropriate, she can stay current on the news of the day without wanting to throw herself into the sea. Finding the irony in sick and scary situations is sometimes the only way to cope. The Daily Crime Report is not only therapy for herself but it’s also a gift to others who want to stay informed without going insane, self destructing or kicking the dog. She started blogging 10 years ago after she found out she had late stage breast cancer while temporarily uninsured. It was the Great Recession and as an artist and leader of an arts nonprofit, she couldn’t afford private health insurance anymore (it was more than her mortgage) so she cancelled it. Then everything fell apart when she lost the gamble and got sick. She got mad at the Democrats and President Obama for letting the Republicans beat them up without fighting back and checked out of politics for self preservation, missing valuable information on Obamacare that would literally save her life. She became famous over night after an op ed that she wrote for the Los Angeles Times, “Obamacare to the Rescue” thrust her into the very center of the national health insurance reform debate. She decided to learn everything she could about the Affordable Care Act and the history of health care in America so that she could break it down and make it easy for people to understand in her blog, “Health Hazards” and to clear her karma for being a lazy citizen and checking out. It was during this time that she was introduced to the cruel, entitled, ignorant people who are all too familiar to us today. MAGAs were isolated back then and didn’t have a leader. They came out of the woodwork to wish her harm, all because they “didn’t want to pay for her healthcare.” Total strangers kicking a mom with cancer while she was down.....only in America. That whole experience re-aligned her civic and personal priorities and she vowed never to get complacent or too mad to care again. She’s doing her part by staying actively engaged in our democracy by writing the Daily Crime Report and yelling at people to do their part too.
