CNN, in an attempt to boost its ratings with a dumbed down, right wing media addicted, white audience and to be the first media outlet to stir up Trump mania ahead of the 2024 election, hosted a mellow MAGA rally that they called a town hall in New Hampshire to gift Trump with 90 minutes to play his greatest hits before a cherry picked, Trump loving audience. 400 white supremacists gave him a standing ovation when he walked on stage.
The moderator was Kaitlin Collins. She’s from the heart of Dixie, Alabama, and got her start on right wing media spreading lies, anti-Semitism and xenophobia. She appeared on Fox as a commentator representing Tucker Carlson’s Daily Caller.
Kaitlin asked about the 2020 election and he said (surprise!) it was rigged. He romanticized January 6 and read from the speech that he made that day. “A lot of the people here probably were there … it was a beautiful day.” He intends to pardon many of the January 6 rioters and called the cop who shot Ashli Babbitt a “thug.” In summary, January 6 was wild!
He got a round of applause after he said Pence should have done more on January 6 to help him overturn the election. Kaitlin asked if he thought he owed Pence an apology, since he almost got killed, and he said, “No because he did something wrong. He should’ve put the votes back to the state legislatures.” The audience applauded.
He mocked E. Jean Carroll and the audience laughed. He not only defamed her again, he put her life in danger. There is no telling what any of those nut cases might want to do to her after being pumped up on Trump mania and CNN.
He took credit for overturning Roe v Wade. He said SCOTUS killing abortion rights was “a great decision” and blathered on about infanticide which the Republicans say is a thing. It is not.
The fat fuck said school shootings can be fixed by arming educators in the classroom. Teachers “are people that really understand weapons.”
Kaitlin Collins asked, “Do you still have any classified documents in your possession?” Trump answered, “I have no classified documents and by the way they automatically declassified when I took them.”
Trump wouldn’t commit to accepting the 2024 election results.
CNN did not structure the format of the program with screens and graphics with facts. Kaitlin put on a good show, but he got all of his talking points in, as scripted.
He called Kaitlin Collins a nasty person. She knew he was going to say that.
Normal people were horrified that CNN did this, but they didn’t do it for normal people. They did it for abnormal people who they want as regular viewers. Their statement on the town hall: “Tonight Kaitlan Collins exemplified what it means to be a world-class journalist. She asked tough, fair and revealing questions. And she followed up and fact-checked President Trump in real time.”
Christopher Licht, the Chair and CEO of CNN for the past year, said covering Trump is “tricky and messy” and it will “continue to be messy and tricky, but it’s our job. America was served very well by what we did last night.” Many of his employees strongly disagreed. “You do not have to like the former president’s answers, but you can’t say that we didn’t get them,” Licht told pissed off staffers. “Kaitlan pressed him again and again and made news. Made a LOT of news. That is our job.” There was no news. There was nothing new. It was the same old MAGA bullshit offered up to Tucker’s audience.
Holding power to account and informing the public is the job of a free press, not entertainment for ratings. CNN normalized Trump and his crimes by giving him a “town hall.”
Trump never called CNN fake news last night like he did for 5 years straight. With Christopher Licht in charge, CNN has gone from fake news to make news.
