Democrat or Democratic?
Jamie Raskin schooled Lauren Boebert and the rest of the Republicans on the proper use of the words, “Democrat” and “democratic” since half of them clearly don’t know the difference and the rest do but use them interchangeably in a derogatory way to insult Democrats. He said from the podium on the House floor, “Democrat is the noun. When you use it as an adjective, you say Democratic.” He compared it to Democrats “if every time we mentioned the other party it just came out with a kind of political speech impediment like, oh, the Banana Republican Party.”
Republicans have been doing this for over 70 years, ever since the racists left the Democratic Party and joined the Banana Republicans. They dropped the “ic” to demean their rivals. By turning “Democratic Party” into “Democrat Party” they made a slur out of it and them. They have always known what they were doing. MAGA Republicans on the other hand, have no idea what they’re doing. “Democrat party” went from an insulting signifier to an idiot identifier. Using the slur used to be the way that Republicans would “own the libs” but the party has been so dumbed down that members don’t knowingly say it to annoy the Democrats but say it because they’re idiots.
“Democrat Party” has always bugged the Democrats. That’s why Republicans do it. Never wanting to stoop to their level, Democrats have ignored them for decades, avoiding immature rebuttals, but the truth is they have always despised it.
Senator Joseph McCarthy from Wisconsin, who ruined lives and careers in the fifties by forming a committee to accuse and investigate people for being communists or spies for Russia who had infiltrated the government, Hollywood, and universities used the term, “Democrat Party” a lot when meaning to demonize Democrats and liberals. The term “McCarthyism” comes from his time in Congress, not from Speaker Kevin McCarthy letting insurrectionists infiltrate the House of Representatives. The term, “McCarthyism” has been used since the fifties to describe demagoguery and recklessness to attack enemies and rivals. Spending a bunch of taxpayer money on investigating unsubstantiated accusations in the name of patriotism is what Joseph McCarthy is remembered for. It’s what Kevin McCarthy will go down in history for, too.
In 1956, the RNC’s public relations director, L. Richard Guylay, made the use of “Democrat Party” an official policy. When Barry Goldwater ran for president in 1964 he took it to a new level by adding “radical” and “socialism” to the demeaning label to brand liberalism as being anti-American and it worked. Newt Gingrich built on it in the nineties with the help of Rush Limbaugh who used “Democrat Party” regularly. George W. Bush used “Democrat Party” in a C student kind of way (he copied off of someone else’s paper and didn’t care one way or the other what the proper term was). By the time Trump came along the GOP had lost all control. Trump used it in a D student kind of way — he heard it somewhere and saw that it got a negative reaction so he kept doing it. He went after Democratic women with it in his tweets. He hit on misogyny and Islamophobia with, “Representatives Omar and Tlaib are the face of the Democrat Party, and they HATE Israel!” He covered racism with, “Congresswoman Maxine Waters, an extraordinary low IQ person, has become, together with Nancy Pelosi, the Face of the Democrat Party. She has just called for harm to supporters, of which there are many, of the Make America Great Again movement. Be careful what you wish for Max!”
“The Democrat party is the party of weak men and unhappy women.” — Tucker Carlson
Ted Cruz said he thought Elizabeth Warren might have a penis because “in today’s Democrat Party, how do we know she doesn’t?”
Marco Rubio tweeted: The upscale liberals who control the media and Democrat party believe Jan 6th was another Pearl Harbor or 9/11. And the rest of America, including many Democrats, think they are nuts.
Thank you Professor Raskin. You are one of the smartest, most patriotic members in the House of Representatives and you used your professorial skills to set the record straight, on the congressional record, about the differences between “Democrat” and “Democratic.” You educated the MAGA Republicans and called out the rest and we all got to see it.
The Banana Republicans have been officially owned by the Democratic Party.
