Fascism is Here

It’s only been one week since the Senate acquitted Trump. Only one week. We have a lawless president who is emboldened to go all the way now, now that he knows he can get away with absolutely anything. He has been handed unlimited power and will be running our government like his own criminal businesses from now on and no one will stop him.

Trump hosted a meet and greet in the Oval Office with the president of Ecuador and reporters. He carefully placed a stack of red MAGA hats next to him on the end table because he’s always campaigning. When a reporter asked him if he had learned a lesson from impeachment, he answered, “That the Democrats are crooked. They’ve got a lot of crooked things going on. That they’re vicious. That they shouldn’t have brought impeachment.”

Bill Barr will be testifying in front of the House Judiciary committee on March 31, after John Bolton’s book comes out (speaking of John Bolton, where is he?) The committee would like to know why he intervened in the sentencing recommendation of Trump’s buddy, Roger Stone, hours after DOJ prosecutors made their recommendation to the court and Trump tweeted his displeasure. Trump doesn’t think that his buddy with the tattoo of Richard Nixon on his back should go to jail for 9 years just because he was convicted of 7 felonies that carried a maximum sentence of 20 years.

When a reporter asked Trump if he would pardon Roger Stone he said, “I don’t want to say that yet.”

A brave juror stepped up to defend the prosecutors who resigned in the Roger Stone case to say how professional they were. Within hours Trump targeted the juror, an ordinary citizen who was just doing their civic duty in a tweet: Now it looks like the fore person in the jury, in the Roger Stone case, had significant bias. Add that to everything else, and this is not looking good for the “Justice” Department.

When a reporter asked Trump about the four prosecutors in the Roger Stone case, Trump said that they ought to go back to school and learn.

The Department of Justice is in chaos. Nobody trusts the attorney general Bill Barr and prosecutors are afraid of what might happen if they take cases that might offend Trump. Trump has the justice department right where he wants them— neutered and powerless so it won’t investigate him.

Steve Bannon is thrilled about how things are going. He says Trump understands now how to use presidential power. “The pearl-clutchers better get used to it.”

Marie Yovanovitch was honored at Georgetown University School of Foreign Service yesterday. She was given the Trainor Award for Excellence in the Conduct of Diplomacy. The minute she walked on stage everybody stood up and gave her a long standing ovation. In her acceptance speech she warned, “right now the State Department is in trouble.”

MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow’s first segment last night turned viewers’ blood cold. She talked about the shedding of our democratic foundations under the Trump presidency. Institutions are collapsing rapidly after being sustained this long by depending on good faith of actors within them who are now either leaving or are corrupt. We are no longer protected by our institutions and the rule of law. Rachel ended the segment by saying that fascism is here.

Do not underestimate the seriousness of this moment.
