Inauguration 2021

And just like that, smart people were everywhere, working.

The inauguration for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris was exciting and well done — no crowd because of the coronavirus, just bare bones process and procedures, scaled back pageantry, with close family, past presidents, members of Congress, and Mike Pence.

Everybody wore masks, even the Republicans.

Eugene Goodman, the Capitol Hill Police Officer who saved senators from being assassinated 14 days earlier, escorted Kamala Harris.

Trump’s 3 SCOTUS appointees were there and not because they had to be. Their presence is not required. Not all of the justices were there. That could be a good sign.

Lady Gaga was just as gaga over Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, and the Obamas as people are gaga over her. She sang the National Anthem and gestured towards the flag that was still there after insurgents had taken it down and replaced it with a Trump flag 2 weeks earlier.

Republican Garth Brooks sang Amazing Grace and asked everybody at home watching to sing it with him which they did and now country western fans are wondering if they’re supposed to burn Garth Brooks CDs and never sing Amazing Grace again or just sing along with the liberals at home.

22 year old black youth poet laureate Amanda Gorman put a period on the end of the ceremony with the reading of her poem, The Hill We Climb, symbolizing the new young America.

After the first Latina Supreme Court Justice, Sonia Sotomayor, administered the oath to the first Black/Asian female VP, Kamala Harris, Justice Roberts swore Joe Biden in as president and America exhaled for the first time in 4 years. It was over. Trump had lost control of the military codes and was gone. In his inaugural address, President Biden called for unity, promising to the president for all people. He called white supremacy out by name and said that Justice for All won’t be deferred any longer. He reminded everybody that democracy may have prevailed, but it is precious and fragile and must be protected. He let the world know that America was back and under new management.

This is the 13th inauguration that Joe Biden has been to. 9 were when he was a senator, 3 where when he was VP, and this one as the president. He is the most experienced president we’ve ever had and the right man for the job at this moment in history. While he cleans up Trump’s mess, puts the country back on track, and tries to bring Republicans to the table, he has opened countless doors for progressives of all colors, genders, and ages to be members of his administration. They will give rise to others. The old white America is dying out. That’s why the Capitol was attacked by US citizens 2 weeks ago. They don’t want the Civil War to be over.

2 of the most radical presidencies were represented at this inauguration both involved Joe Biden — Barack Obama and Kamala Harris.

We have a functioning government again! Kamala Harris swore in Senators Warnock, Ossoff and Padilla which gave the Democrats control of the Senate. With the additions of a black man, a Jewish man, and a Latino born to Mexican immigrants, the Senate is a more modern institution that reflects the real America. As bad as the past 4 years have been, we are becoming a more perfect union.

Mitch McConnell is no longer the Senate Majority Leader and can no longer keep the Senate from doing its job.

President Biden signed executive orders after the inauguration at the Resolute Desk with framed pictures of his family and a bust of Cesar Chavez behind him. The Andrew Jackson portrait was replaced with Benjamin Franklin. He made a 100 day mask challenge to the nation and then set about signing executive orders that were about mandating masks and social distancing on federal property, getting us back into the Paris Accord, stopping construction of Trump’s racist wall, rejoining the World Health Organization, extending rent and mortgage moratoriums until the end of March, reversing Trump’s Muslim ban, giving people a break on federal student loans until end of Sept, cancelling the Keystone pipeline, rescinding Trump’s white supremacist political propaganda (“1776”) for schools, protecting LGBTQs in the workplace, requiring that non-citizens be included in the census, protecting Dreamers from being deported, undoing Trump’s aggressive hunt of immigrants, halting drilling in the arctic and national monuments, and making sure that his appointees respect the autonomy of the Department of Justice or else.

Daily press briefings will make a comeback! Truth and transparency are in! President Biden’s number one goal for his communications team is to rebuild trust with the public. Jen Psaki is the new press secretary. She believes in democracy and a free press and has a lot of experience. She has a big broad vocabulary and is respectful, too. She answered all press questions happily, was well informed and never rude, and never called on OANN.

The day ended with a virtual concert by Bruce Springsteen, Justin Timberlake and Ant Clemons, John Bon Jovi, Foo Fighters, Black Pumas, John Legend, and Katy Perry. They played at various sites around the DC Mall and country. Tom Hanks MC’d from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It was cold. Like the rest of America, some of the celebs were carrying a few extra quarantine pounds and had bad haircuts which was even more of a comfort to all of us who have been trapped in our homes for 9 months waiting for the sky to fall. We really are in this together. Lady Gaga has a new chin too!

“Day one of the Biden presidency and the closest thing to a controversy on Twitter is people politely pleading for Tom Hanks to put on a coat.” — Brian Fallon

“As an aging reporter, I generally yield to no one in my hardboiled cynicism. But that was an inspiring show. Seems there are a lot of great Americans out there.” — Scott Shane

“The inauguration balls are for donors. This was for us.” — Tom Watson

Bless Joe Biden for taking this on. Most men his age are taking it easy after working their butts off their entire adult lives. He’s going to have to work harder than ever with this gig. We the People saved our democracy but by just a hair. This is not the end. We the People have to stay engaged in our democracy so Trump never happens again.

We can never take America for granted again.
