President Biden’s state of the union speech was the most confrontational speech a president has ever made because he’s a wise old old-timer who knows exactly who he’s talking to and doesn’t give a fuck.
He started off by going down the list of everything he’s done in the past 2 years. It’s quite a list. It would be phenomenal even if he hadn’t taken office during a global pandemic, a crashed economy, with widespread corruption and fascists in the government. He saved our ass. His long list of accomplishments wasn’t news to people who pay attention. It was news to a lot of other people though and that’s pathetic. 60% of those surveyed before the speech said Biden hasn’t done much. Where did they get that idea? Biden’s legislative accomplishments during his first 2 years are the most consequential in history but people don’t know because they’re lazy.
He began with, “Two years ago, our democracy faced its greatest threat since the Civil War. Today, though bruised, our democracy remains unbowed and unbroken,” looking straight into the eyes of traitors who were part of an attempted coup, domestic terrorists serving in Congress.
Biden is right. We’ve just lived through the second worst period in American history. The worst period, the Civil War, happened in slow motion compared to the Trump era because they didn’t have cable TV, the internet, and social media to keep them informed in real time. We should be smarter and better informed than people were 160 years ago but we’re not because we’re lazy, distracted, under educated, easily duped, and we take America for granted.
He called out the Republicans who didn’t vote for the infrastructure bill whose districts will benefit from it anyway. He said cheerfully, “It’s OK because I said I’d be the president for all people. I’ll see you at the groundbreaking!”
He called out the Republicans whose tax plan that they got Trump to sign off on for being unfair. “I’m a capitalist — you gotta pay your fair share. The tax system is not fair…….In 2020, 55 corporations made 40 billion in profits and paid 0 in taxes.” That’s not capitalism. That’s an oligarchy.
He called out the Republicans for trying to repeal the Inflation Reduction Act and promised to veto it if they go through with it.
He called out the Republicans for saying that they were going to eliminate Social Security and Medicare. They booed him for that. He turned the boos on them and said he was happy to hear that they changed their minds. “I’m glad to see it, I enjoy a conversion……Social Security and its bookend, Medicare, are off the books now, right?…..We have unanimity!” He tricked them into going on record for saying they won’t touch Social Security. Beth Van Duyne from Texas thought she was being smart when she asked him to name anybody who wanted to take Social Security away. She yelled out, “Name one!” Walked right into that one, Beth. He answered, “Uh, OK, I will — Senator Rick Scott.” Ironically, Rick Scott made millions by ripping Medicare off and he wants to end the program all together because it won’t affect him, he’s the richest guy in the Senate. Rick just got owned by Mitch McConnell by kicking him off the commerce committee because he challenged his authority. He kicked Mike Lee off too because he backed Scott for running against him for minority leader in the Senate. The cameras picked Mike Lee up booing about cutting Social Security. A quick google search will turn up video of Mike Lee talking to constituents vehemently calling for the elimination of Social Security and Medicare.
He called out the MAGA Republicans in a roundabout way by acknowledging his friend and their violence, “A few months ago, unhinged by the Big Lie, an assailant unleashed political violence in the home of the then Speaker of this House of Representatives. Using the very same language that insurrectionists who stalked these halls chanted on January sixth…….my friend, Paul Pelosi.” Paul was there, sitting next to Bono looking like Leonard Cohen, and he got a standing ovation. Nancy Pelosi was seated up front where she wiped a tear from her eye. We’re living through the second worst period in American history because the Civil War never really ended. The Pelosis were targeted because the Republicans branded them as elitist Yankees. They tricked a crazy man into hating and attacking them on their behalf.
There were side shows going on before, during and after Biden’s speech. Mitt Romney confronted George Santos on the floor and told him he didn’t belong there. Then Santos got a spot at the end of the aisle so the cameras would pick him up as Biden entered the chambers. When the press asked Romney about that after the speech ended he said, “He’s a sick puppy. Given the fact that he’s under an ethics investigation he should be sitting in the back row being quiet instead of parading in front of the president.” When asked if he was disappointed in McCarthy for not telling him to resign he said, “yes.” A lot of MAGA Republicans heckled Biden throughout the speech which made Joe Wilson look polite in comparison (he’s the guy who yelled out, “YOU LIE!” during the first Black president’s state of the union speech.) Marjorie Taylor Greene, wearing a dead white animal on her shoulders, heckled Biden like a drunk throughout a televised pro wrestling match. She yelled out, “You lie!” and “Liar!” countless times. She got a lot of camera attention for that, more than Kyrsten Sinema got and she came dressed as Big Bird. Lauren Boebert was picked up on camera shaking her head in disgust as if she understood what Biden was talking about. McCarthy shushed his members 4 times during the speech like a substitute teacher who didn’t have control of the classroom. Earlier in the day, he warned them that they better behave themselves during the speech or else. They blew him off because he’s just a lame substitute teacher and the MAGA Republicans rule the school.
The Republicans, who put so much energy into owning the libs, got owned by Biden last night. The more they heckled him the more he owned them and he enjoyed it. He played with them like a cat in a box of cockroaches.
The repugs’ hero old white guy is Bedtime for Bonzo Ronald Reagan, a former B-rated actor, New Deal supporting Democrat, and president of the Screen Actors Guild. His mind closed over time to be more conservative and more exceptional. In some ways, surviving being shot at the age of 70 was a good thing because he got to literally act his way through it and reinvent himself as a rough and tough cowboy. Being so tough helped him win a second term where he ended up doing whatever the hell he wanted because he was John Wayne. He was, and still is, invincible to Republicans. Getting shot created the myth and legend. Getting shot was glamorous. Maybe that’s why Republicans love guns so much. Guns make them feel like B-rated movie stars. Like John Wayne. Like Ronald Reagan.
The Democrats’ old white guy is Joe Biden whose mind opens wider as he ages. He is busting the stereotype of the old, closed minded white guy and will go down in history as being one of our most progressive presidents. Reagan is admired for his projected image. Biden will be remembered for being real. Joe Public — the everyman. Not at all exceptional which makes him exceptional.
