Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty on all 3 counts. He will be sentenced in 8 weeks. It was an historical day because a cop was finally going to go to jail for killing a black man, but it was also a sad day because George Floyd is still dead and the hundreds of thousands of black men, women and children who have been killed at the hands of law enforcement didn’t get the same justice. George Floyd’s brother said the verdict was for them too and is dedicating the rest of his life to the revolution.
At the press conference that followed the announcement, Attorney General and former Congressman Keith Ellison commended the bystanders who did what they could and told the country, “The work of our generation is to put unaccountable policing behind us — to put an end to racism. Nobody can do everything but everybody can do something.”
St Louis Congresswoman Cori Bush and BLM activist was relieved but not joyful. She said, “This was accountability, but it was not justice. Justice for us is saving lives.”
Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama were glad about the outcome but they too said it wasn’t enough. “If we’re being honest with ourselves, we know that true justice is about much more than a single verdict in a single trial.”
Vice President Kamala Harris and former Attorney General of California said, “A measure of justice isn’t the same as equal justice, we still must reform the system,” and then called upon Congress to pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act which she helped write while she was in the Senate. It has already passed the House. Congresswoman Karen Bass is working with a couple of members of the Senate to try and get the 60 votes to beat the inevitable racist filibuster. Tim Scott, the only black member of the Senate, is one of them. Which way will he go? With his community or with the Republikkkans?
President Biden addressed the nation later in the day. He said this is the time to take systemic racism head on. He was smart to mention that the Senate needs to confirm his 2 nominees, civil rights attorneys Kristen Clarke and Vanita Gupta for positions in the Justice Department. He hit the ball over into their court on national TV. What are they going to do? Pick it up or throw it back? They’ve been defining both women of color as radicals (code for non-white liberals.)
As usual and expected, the Republikkkans went on the attack in response to the verdict.
Gym Jordan did what he always does in a House Judiciary committee hearing, screaming about Democrats and defending blue lives. Congresswoman Val Demings, a former police chief from Orlando Florida, ripped him a new one and called him out for not supporting the police when they were under attack — only when it’s politically convenient for him to do so. She yelled back and then yielded back.
Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted: DC is completely dead tonight. People stayed in and were scared to go out because of fear of riots. Police are everywhere and have riot gear. BLM is the strongest terrorist threat in our county.
Washington DC was lovely last night. People were out and about enjoying the 72 degree spring time weather. Marjorie Taylor Greene is a racist liar but we knew that already.
Republikkkans tried to nail black Congresswoman Maxine Waters for “inciting” violence but were unsuccessful in censuring her. 210 House Republicans voted to censure her. 11 voted to strip her of committee assignments. Maxine says she’s used to them targeting her and will never shut her mouth.
“Today’s Democrat Party has decided to encourage violence because it benefits them politically.” — Ted Cruz
Fox News viewers were freaking out as they watched nonstop of coverage of a prejudiced jury sending a man of the law to jail, afraid that they’d all be lynched by black people and liberals in their sleep at night.
Tucker Carlson’s reaction about the verdict was to rant about BLM looting, rioting and murdering for a year, politicians intimidating the jury and decent people getting fed up and moving out of the country. He called the verdict “an attack on civilization” and claimed that the jury was intimidated into voting guilty…….”Please don’t hurt us!”
Laura Ingraham’s show focused on the left using the Derek Chauvin trial to vilify all cops. She said the liberals’ claims of systemic racism is the real Big Lie. One of her guests said people are trying to go viral by provoking the police and that it pays to be a crook because “if you get killed by a cop you get $27 million paid to your family and another $20 million on GoFundMe.”
While the Derek Chauvin verdict was being announced the cops in Columbus, Ohio killed a 16 year old black girl who had called 911 for help. They shot her 4 times in the chest. 3 cops told bystanders as the girl’s body lay in the street, “Blue lives matter.”
The cops will kill 3 more people today, tomorrow and the day after that and the day after that.
The Senate must pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.
