RIP Reaganomics

President Biden knocked it out of the park last night in his first address to a joint session of Congress. He kicked it off by saying, “Madame Speaker. Madame Vice President. No president has ever said those words from this podium, and it’s about time.”

Joe Biden spoke of huge, historical accomplishments, even though he “inherited a nation in crisis.” More jobs were created in his first hundred days than any president on record and the economy is expected to grow 6% — more than in over 4 decades.

The US economy grew by 6.4% last quarter. That’s the most it has grown in 18 years. People got their stimulus checks and spent them right away and businesses got back on track with the help of the vaccine. The roll out of the covid vaccine has been the most successful logistical government program in history.

President Biden told the country, “Trickle down economics has never worked. It’s time to grow the economy from the bottom and the middle out.” When he talked about all of the jobs that will be created under his new jobs plan, Republicans didn’t clap. They turned their noses up at the American Jobs Plan not because they’re cheap and don’t want to pay for it but because it involves actual work which rich people care nothing about. All they care about is rich people.

President Biden called the January 6 insurrection the worst attack on our democracy since the Civil War. He said, “As we gather here tonight, the images of a violent mob assaulting this Capitol, desecrating our democracy, remain vivid in all our minds. The insurrection was an existential crisis — a test of whether our democracy could survive. It did.” Republicans didn’t clap.

QAnon member of Congress, Lauren Boebert, who gave tours of the Capitol right before the attack, was there taking up space, chewing gum and rolling her eyes, like a teenaged drop out. She brought a thermal blanket instead of a tin foil hat. Having her there marked the first time in history that a sitting member of Congress was in attendance at a presidential address who could be a literal threat to the US president.

Joe Biden talked about 12 years of guaranteed public education being no longer enough. He framed 2 free years of free community college as an extension of K-12 public education. The Republicans didn’t clap.

When Joe Biden talked about the Violence Against Women Act, fixing old pipes so people had clean water to drink, pulling kids out of poverty, 70% of seniors being vaccinated and deaths down 80%, and 800,000 more people having insurance because of Obamacare, the Republicans didn’t clap.

Joe Biden is the right man for this time. He is proposing a major paradigm shift, forced upon him by a new generation that has been raised in a different economy who are demanding a new social compact. That want capitalism to have a conscience. He understands this and is responding. He is using his power and a lifetime of experience, knowing that at his age, it’s now or never, to make big bold change that will catapult the country forward.

Republicans are not only not clapping, they’re scowling and fantasizing about the good old days with Saint Ronnie.

He dared to go where no other president has ever gone in a public speech by saying, “To all the transgender Americans watching at home, especially the young people who are so brave, I want you to know that your president has your back.”

When Biden moved on to systemic racism and asked Congress to pass the George Floyd policing reform bill before next month to commemorate the anniversary of his death, the Republicans just sat there. They didn’t clap.

When he asked Congress to pass HR1 and the John Lewis Voting Rights Act to protect all citizens’ rights to vote, the Republicans just sat there, silently vowing to never let that happen.

Ted Cruz fell asleep. Cruz control! Asleep at the wheel again! Mitt Romney thought he could get away with napping by sitting way in the back next to the exit but he got picked up on camera too, dozing.

Uncle Tim did exactly what he was told to do when he made the GOP rebuttal after President Biden finished his speech. Tim Scott told the country that America is not racist and Biden is pulling us apart. Instead of using the moment to talk about what he’s doing with Democrats to protect the black community from police brutality and murder, and then using his own real life experience of being racially profiled and threatened by police to show how rampant the problem is, he towed the party line and let himself be used by looking straight into the camera, a black man in America, to say that racism doesn’t exist in America. Republicans clapped for that.

85% of Americans approved of President Biden’s speech. The Republicans slept, rolled their eyes and never clapped.

“Hearing this sane, sober, sincere and substantive presidential address is such a jarring experience when compared to the ones given by the twice impeached madman prior.” — Fernand R. Amandi

Trump’s first speech was all about gloom and doom, invaders, mayhem, violence, and a shit hole country. Joe Biden on the other hand, talked about all that has been accomplished in 100 days by working together and how even bigger things are possible if we continue to work together. He went big by saying that government is good. Forty years ago, a newly elected American president declared government to be the problem. Last night Joe Biden embraced government as the solution.

The mythical Reagan era is finally over. Trickle down economics never worked. The trickle is in a pickle. The plutocracy is getting taxed and getting knocked down to right size. The GOP is in deep shit. Rest in pernicious partisanship, then prison, you piss ant pendejos.

RIP Reaganomics.
