This is Huge
Kansans turned out in record numbers yesterday and voted to not let their legislators outlaw abortion like they did in Texas. They made history! Kansas is a red state (Trump won it by 14 points in 2020). Republicans chose this midterm primary to run the “Value Them Both” measure because they were confident that people wouldn’t show up to vote. They expected a 36% turnout and got 47%. People stood in line for hours even after polls closed. Republicans spent $5 million trying to convince people to go along with their plan to take abortion rights away from women in Kansas but it didn’t work. Voters rejected them by 19 points. 60% rejected extremism. Democrats, Republicans and Independents voted against government sanctioned forced birth and letting women die from dangerous pregnancies. They rejected the Supreme Court making single parents out of middle school girls who were raped by their fathers. New voter registrations went up after the court reversed Roe v Wade. 70% of them were women, and they weren’t all Democrats. Independents turned out to vote, too. They can’t vote for candidates in primaries but they showed up just for this measure. This was a huge win for Kansas, a huge win for women, and a huge win for democracy.
Citizens in a red state turned out on behalf of women and put a stop to what Republican legislators have been doing to half of their constituents in states all across the country. This is HUGE. This is democracy in action.
Put abortion on the ballot in every state in November and that will turn the country blue.
Attorney General Merrick Garland filed a lawsuit against Idaho for restricting abortion access for women who receive Medicaid, the government health care plan for low income people. Garland says you can’t take government funds and deny a woman lifesaving medical care for any reason.
Trump’s White House counsel, Pat Cipollone has been subpoenaed by a federal grand jury. No one knows more about what Trump did than Cipollone (besides Mark Meadows). He’s been claiming a lot of executive privilege and not answering questions. DOJ is getting that waived so he’s going to have to answer questions he has been avoiding under oath. This is HUGE.
More text messages from January 6 were found to be wiped from phones of top Trump Department of Defense officials including Secretary of Defense Chris Miller, former Pentagon chief of staff Kash Patel, and former Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy plus other senior Defense Department and Army officials who were supposed to mobilize the National Guard. Miller and Patel told Sean Hannity on the air that they testified under oath that Trump asked for 10,000 National Guard troops. That was a lie.
So far we know that the Secret Service, Homeland Security, and Pentagon phones were erased. Who else? Crimes were committed by the US Military against the government such as conspiracy to defraud the government, violation of Federal Records Act, and obstruction of Congressional investigations. More will be revealed. This is huge.
Comedian and veterans rights activist, Jon Stewart, and veterans scored a HUGE win after the Senate passed the PACT Act, a bill that expands benefits to veterans who were poisoned by toxic burn pits. Dozens of skanky Republicans were shamed into voting yes after they were picked up on C-SPAN fist bumping each other after blocking the vote a few days ago. That went viral and infuriated the country. 14 voted no on June 16. 41 voted no on July 27. 11 voted no yesterday. Zero Democrats voted no.
Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania voted no after he tried getting an amendment that he wanted passed. During his rant on the Senate floor he bashed Jon Stewart as a “pseudo-celebrity.” The other 10 who voted no were Mitt Romney and Mike Lee of Utah, Mike Crapo and James Risch of Idaho, Richard Shelby and Tommy Tuberville of Alabama, Rand Paul of Kentucky, James Lankford of Oklahoma, Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming, and Thom Tillis of North Carolina. Mike Lee, Mike Crapo, Rand Paul, and James Lankford are all up for re-election in November. Pat Toomey and Richard Shelby are quitting.
