Tweeting in Blackface
Even though Trump made it OK for Republicans to be out and proud racists, some of them still went ahead and tweeted MLK quotes that they don’t believe at all in honor of Martin Luther King Jr’s birthday. To wit:
White privileged libertarian and fake doctor, Rand Paul, who opposes the Civil Rights Act of 1964 tweeted: As we honor MLK today, may his courage inspire us to redouble our commitment to working together for change. Let’s commemorate the life of Dr. Martin Luther King by uniting the two Americas into one: an America that includes justice for one, and justice for all. #MLKDay
Uncle Tim Scott, the only Black Republican member in the senate made sure he tweeted about God and skin color: Today we honor the great Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He firmly believed that all God’s children — no matter the color of their skin — would one day come together to bring us closer to the concept of a more perfect union.
Marco Rubio, who is against voting rights and accuses the Dems of using them to amass more power, who loves to claim his Hispanic heritage when milking the fact that his parents escaped Cuba for a better life in the US whenever he wants to kiss up to immigrants, who usually tweets quotes from the Bible, quoted MLK : “When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir.”
Proud confederate Cindy Hyde Smith, whose state Black population is 37.8% and are descendants of slaves and victims of systemic racism thought it would be a good idea to tweet about volunteerism (free labor:) On #MLKDay we are reminded that it is a day on, not a day off. Mississippians and Americans come together to volunteer in a myriad of ways to work to make our nation more equitable in honor and memory of Dr. King and his invaluable contributions to our nation. #MLKDayOfService
Lisa Murkowski went above and beyond by posting a video of herself talking about MLK’s legacy and civil rights — the usual empty rhetoric that all Republicans say when the cameras are on. 65% of the 732,000 people who live in Alaska are white so voting NO on voting rights won’t hurt her politically. She did this video to be politically correct while upholding the white supremacist status quo in the Senate.
Quintessential white male Republican asshole Kevin McCarthy who represents 9,000 more people in his district in Southern California than Lisa Murkowski does in all of Alaska, 37% of whom are Hispanic who work in agriculture (immigrants) and are not encouraged to vote because if they did, they’d never vote for a guy like Kevin McCarthy, had the nerve to tweet: From the halls of Ebenezer Baptist Church to the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, #MLK spent his life spreading what he called “the gospel of freedom.” He never gave up and never preached hate. His words and example inspire us today as we celebrate a great American on #MLKDay .
Republican darling Kyrsten Sinema’s tweet was obligatory: Today we remember the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. #MLKDay
Republican congressman and former Green Beret from Florida took a selfie video of himself in front of the MLK monument in DC saying MLK would have been made a great Green Beret. Dr. King was a pacifist and an outspoken critic of Vietnam.
“A lot of people are quoting Dr. King today to justify actions that are an insult to his legacy. If he were alive today, these same hypocrites would be vilifying him on Fox News.” — Dan Rather
MLK’s son and young granddaughter called Democrats-in-name-only Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin out in their speeches at a voting rights march in DC for being hypocrites. They say they support voting rights but they won’t vote to change the filibuster that has been changed 160 times to pass all sorts of legislation already. They say one thing and do another, just like all the Republicans who tweeted about MLK yesterday.
Today the Senate will vote on whether or not the voting rights of Black, brown and poor people will be protected. Republicans will vote hell no. Democrats in name only will vote hell no we won’t go.
