Twenty Two Review
2022 began with the country so divided it resembled the months before the Civil War. The confederates were all revved up by Trump, the GOP, “state rights,” social media, QAnon, and Fox News while the Union scratched its head and wondered how so many people could be so stupid, gullible, and hateful.
It was a great year for President Biden. He broke all sorts of legislative, administrative, and progressive records and ended the year as one of the most consequential presidents in modern history for their first two years in office. He confronted the division and placed the blame on the GOP. He drew a line in the sand and called the Republicans out. He asked them to pick a side — democracy (Union) or Trumpism (confederacy). He dubbed the traitors “MAGA Republicans,” giving his old friends in Congress a chance to redeem themselves by stepping out (which none of them took — we have yet to learn why).
We could find out why the Republicans have been so anti-American and compliant in 2023 when their secrets start coming out.
Republicans didn’t win big in the midterms as expected, based on history. The opposite political party of the president usually gains seats in the midterms. Many Republicans threw in the towel or lost re-election. The new members are crazier and more anti-democracy than ever. The party lacks leadership and unity. The entire GOP is in chaos.
The first anniversary of the attack on the Capitol was commemorated by the Democrats and only one Republican, Liz Cheney (Republicans refused to participate). Americans finally got to see some justice after the DOJ started indicting organizers of the insurrection and sending out subpoenas, and the Fulton County DA seated a grand jury to look into Trump’s attempt to get the state of Georgia to throw the election to him.
The public finally found hope when the Select Committee started holding televised hearings which told the story of January 6. Trump had planned an actual coup and was going to use the military to seize voting machines, 7 states had plotted to submit fake electoral votes to Congress in order for Trump to overturn the will of the voters, texts and recordings were made public that showed that the coup attempt was an inside job that started with Trump, and Trump not only incited the violence on January 6, he relished in it. Republican members of Congress were outed for taking part in the insurrection. The Secret Service and Department of Defense were found to have been in on it, too.
There was good and bad news that came out of the Supreme Court, mostly bad. The good news was the first Black woman, Ketanji Brown Jackson, was confirmed to the bench. The bad news was the highly partisan, Catholic SCOTUS overturned Roe v Wade which made abortion illegal in many confederate states. Union states amended their own constitutions and made laws to protect women from the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court made history in 2022 for its first African American woman and the lowest public approval rating on record. The public doesn’t respect or trust the highest court in the land.
In Trump’s world, the attorney general of New York sued to put the Trump family out of business and the Trump Organization was found guilty on 17 counts of fraud. The FBI raided Mar-a-Lago and took classified documents that Trump had stolen, putting him under federal investigation for espionage and obstruction of justice. Trump announced he’s running for president again in 2024 in hopes that that will keep him out of jail. A special counsel was appointed to handle Trump’s case — a prosecutor from the Hague — and 3 new grand juries were seated in DC.
There was an assassination attempt on the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, who wasn’t home when the intruder broke into her home, leaving her husband to endure the assault. Mass shootings not only continued, they increased. Domestic terrorism is on the rise. White supremacists continued to go on hate filled shooting sprees with AR-15s, killing lots of innocent people all at once, and they attacked substations in a few different states. They’re not only going after groups of people to terrorize and murder them like the KKK did after the Civil War, they’re going after power grids to shut entire communities down.
Two Republican governors conspired to human traffic legal brown asylum seekers at tax payer expense and not a damn thing has been done about it because they’re powerful southern Republican white men and nothing ever happens to them.
The year ended with Trump’s taxes being released to the public and the Select Committee wrapping up its investigation by releasing its report, complete with deposition transcripts and copies of emails and texts, and referring the former president of the United States to the Department of Justice for prosecution.
Justice is coming in 2023. Confederates, domestic terrorists, and Republicans beware.
