She told the committee, “The company intentionally hides vital information from the public, from the US government, and from governments around the world.” Republicans and Democrats alike shared their disgust and concern about Instagram manipulating and hurting young teens in order to turn a huge profit. Teen substance abuse, depression, self harm, and suicide have gone up exponentially since Instagram came along. “I’m very scared about the upcoming generation.” She blames the platform for the rise in teen isolation, self hatred, and cruelty towards one another. This isn’t like when Tipper Gore led the charge for moms to stop rock musicians from publishing lewd lyrics. This has nothing to do with teen rebellion and everything to do with adults who just want to make a lot of money by leading children and teens into a dark, traumatic, dangerous space online. They’re predators.
