DeSantis and Abbott — The Lloyd and Harry of the GOP
The deep red governors of the two most dysfunctional purple states, Florida and Texas, are in the headlines again. Ron DeSantis of Florida is taking on a billion dollar corporation, Disney World that brings in a ton of tourism revenue to the state and employs 77,000 people, because it criticized Abbott for his anti-LGBTQ legislation, and Greg Abbott is taking heat now for using the border for political purposes to drive up inflation to help himself and the GOP in the midterms. Both he and DeSantis are up for re-election in 2022 and they’re both complete failures at governing. They’re the Lloyd and Harry of the GOP.
Ron DeSantis won his seat in 2018 by only 32,000 votes and like Trump, he behaves as if he won by a landslide. Prior to that he served 3 terms in the US House of Representatives. He went to both Yale and Harvard but plays that down to make the dumb dumb base feel smart. He was once one of the admins for a 95,000 member Facebook group called, “Tea Party.” Typical posts from members slammed the Black Lives Matter movement, called African Americans “ghetto scum,” demeaned the teenage survivors of the Parkland shooting in his state, yelled at liberals about guns, defended Nazis, attacked immigrants, bashed the left, blasted the media, accused Muslims of being terrorists, and mocked John McCain.
One of the first bills he signed was making it legal for teachers to go to school armed in Florida. Dumb. He signed a law that made it a crime to vandalize a confederate statue to appease the dumb people. He signed another law to make it illegal to peacefully protest, specifically targeting Black Lives Matter activists by imposing extreme extralegal charges for offenders such as the elimination of bail, using RICO anti-mafia laws to identify and prosecute protest organizers so they can be charged with felonies that would take away their rights and the ability to collect unemployment benefits if needed.
DeSantis handled covid the same way Trump did which caused it to spread like wildfire throughout Florida. He refused testing and wouldn’t shut the state down. He refused to mandate social distancing, masks or vaccines, and like Trump, a lot of people died because of him. He punished schools if they made kids wear masks by withholding funds and forbade school boards from doing anything to keep kids safe. He kept restaurants and bars open and nullified mask requirements and fought with the cruise lines (another big source of revenue for the state) about allowing unvaccinated aboard. Dumb. Dumb. Dumb. This drove up case, hospitalization and death count numbers to the point that Florida became the sickest, deadliest state in the nation but we’ll never know for sure just how many people got sick and died because he instructed people to lie about infection rates. He shut down all of the state run covid testing centers and let 1 million doses of vaccine expire in a warehouse. He downplayed vaccines and masks, and up-played the miracle cure Regeneron to please his biggest donor who was an investor. He replaced the state’s surgeon general with a QAnon nut, Joseph Ladapo, who didn’t even live in Florida. He too pushed phony remedies and downplayed the vaccine. DeSantis and Ladapo — Dumb and Dumber.
Most recently he signed off on a 15 week abortion ban, a “Don’t Say Gay” bill that prohibits schools from ever mentioning the LGBTQ community, banned math books, drew racist congressional maps, and is abusing his power by going after Disney World to take away their special status to self-govern in a theme-park area to get even with them for calling him out for targeting the LGBTQ community for political gain. That was a really dumb fight to pick because Disney World has lots of money, lawyers, and fans.
Ron DeSantis teamed up with Texas Governor Greg Abbott to get publicity for the “crisis” at the border by sending the National Guard from Florida to the Texas border. They’re two peas in a Dumb and Dumber pod.
Since Greg Abbott’s state has the longest border with Mexico, he has taken full advantage of the “crisis” to help him politically. He just cost the nation $9 billion with a publicity stunt that totally backfired on him. He made truckers wait for over 30 hours so their rigs could be searched for migrants and drugs. None were found, costing Texas $477 million per day. $240 million worth of food had to be thrown out because it rotted sitting in the trucks, and shelves were empty over Easter weekend. He did it for media attention and to drive up inflation because that’s what the Republicans are running on in November.
Before he was governor, Greg Abbott was the attorney general for Texas from 2002–2015. He used to say, “I get up in the morning. I go to the office. I sue President Obama, and I come home.” He was also an associate justice of the Texas Supreme Court from 1996–2001. This is his second term as governor.
Abbott kissed up to dumb ass Trump by telling him that Texas would help him build and pay for his wall and partnered with him on the creating of the “invasion at the border” by producing a video of military vehicles barreling down a gravel road — “More Texas National Guard tactical vehicles being deployed at the southern border. Texas is ready for any incoming caravans attempting to cross into our state. We are the first and last line of defense at our border.”
He not only co-constructed a Hollywood-esque crisis at the border, but he used abortion in the same way by outlawing it and encouraging Texans to serve as vigilantes in exchange for a $10,000 bounty if they turn anybody in who assists a woman in getting an abortion. All for votes.
Abbott has it covered for the GOP dumb dumb haters who vote — illegal immigrants and abortion (big hits and always a sure thing for Republicans running for office,) and a new one — trans kids. He directed doctors, teachers, caregivers, relatives, neighbors, family members, etc., to report parents who support their trans children so they can be investigated for child abuse. He officially directed Family and Protective Services, a government agency, to begin investigating all trans children in Texas.
Like Ron DeSantis in Florida, Greg Abbott made a mess out of the covid pandemic in Texas by repealing mask mandates and downplaying the vaccine during a statewide winter storm and power failure. Texas, the fossil fuel capitol of the country lost all power in February of 2021 after its electrical grid failed during a winter storm that nobody was prepared for because it never gets below freezing in Texas. People not only had no heat, electricity or running water, but they ran out of food and drinking water. He blamed his failure on liberal energy policy and the Green New Deal which had nothing to do with it but it sounded good to dumb Republican voters. People froze to death in their homes and went without water for a week during a pandemic. 90% weren’t vaccinated. That is SO DUMB!
Neither Abbott nor DeSantis are dumb. Quite the contrary. They’re cunning, ruthless, cruel, greedy, intelligent men who destroyed both of their states and made people suffer needlessly out of their own quests for power.
