Ketanji Brown Jackson Confirmation Hearing Day 2
Day 2 of confirmation hearings for Ketanji Brown Jackson. The over qualified candidate had to sit through another day of political theater where Republicans performed for the cameras. They insinuated that she was soft on pedophiles and terrorists, and a radical because she’s a Black woman. They outed themselves as being obsessed with child porn (what is it with these guys and child porn?,) homophobic (gay people should not only not exist, they shouldn’t be allowed to get married,) racist (interracial marriage should be illegal which means Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas’s marriage to Ginny would have to be nullified or prosecuted), sexist (we need to go back to the time, over 60 years ago, before SCOTUS made it legal for married women to use contraception to limit the amount of kids she’d have, never mind single women having sex at all.)
Marsha Blackburn is the only female Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The repugs brought her on after they had to hire a female lawyer to question Christine Blasey Ford about being sexually assaulted by Brett Kavanaugh during his SCOTUS confirmation hearing. They didn’t want to look like a bunch of white uptight hypocritical sexists just because they are. Marsha Blackburn asked Ketanji Brown Jackson to define “woman.”
Lindsey Graham didn’t come prepared with any substantive questions. He performed for Fox hoping to get a few good clips out of it for the evening “news.” He asked her what religion she was, how many times she goes to church, and if she could judge a Catholic (interesting question as the Supreme Court is a Catholic court.). She answered, “There is no religious test under the Constitution, Senator.” Then he asked, “On a scale of 1 to 10, how faithful would you say you are in terms of religion?” She said, “I am reluctant to talk about my faith in this way. I want to be mindful of the need for the public to have confidence in my ability to separate out my personal views.” He used the rest of his time to rant about his perceived grievances against conservatives and the Taliban. He went on a tangent about Guantanamo and tried to make her out to be sympathetic to terrorists. She believes that everybody has a right to legal representation in America and he doesn’t. Her ties to Gitmo are from many years ago when she was assigned to a 9/11 prisoner in an appeals case when she was a federal public defender two decades ago. Lindsey tried to make her look like a terrorist lover. Judge Jackson explained to Lindsey Graham how being a lawyer works. He served as a military lawyer in the US Air Force. He knows. After his rant about GITMO detainees, Lindsey grabbed his drink and made a grand exit. He walked out of the hearing.
Ted Cruz white mansplained Martin Luther King to Ketanji Brown Jackson. He expressed his concerns over Critical Race Theory (ding ding ding ding ding!) She responded by saying, “I’ve never studied critical race theory, and I’ve never used it. It doesn’t come up in my work as a judge (duh duh duh duh duh!)” He thought he had a good gotcha when he put up a blow up of a page out of a children’s book, “Antiracist Baby.” The fact that she was able to keep a straight face throughout such a desperate shit show should take her over the finish line for confirmation. His second gotcha was confronting her about her position on the board of trustees at Georgetown Day School — the first racially integrated school in the nation’s capital that has read “Antiracist Baby” to their students. She has nothing to do with writing children’s books about race nor does she have anything to do with directing curriculum. His gotcha fell flat and he ended up looking like George Castanza interviewing a water boy for New York Yankees.
Tom Cotton asked, “Do you think we should catch and imprison more murderers, or fewer murderers?” What the hell kind of question is that and why did he ask it?
John Cornyn accused her of accusing George Bush and Don Rumsfield of being war criminals. Democrat Dick Durbin came to her defense by saying that she was advocating for her client, a Gitmo detainee, and had filed a petition alleging the US government had sanctioned torture.
John Cornyn asked her if she celebrated Clarence Thomas’s nomination to SCOTUS because you know, they’re both Black.
“Men are too emotional to be Senators” — Some guy on Twitter
None of the Republicans asked intelligent, responsible questions. They had to put on a show because there is nothing in her record to question or attack. She’d be an outstanding Supreme Court justice and they all know it but they’re not going to vote for her. Her interpretation of the Constitution is similar to Scalia’s view, that it should be interpreted as it was written, not as a living, changing document but they’re not going to vote for her.
Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation hearing is showing the country that she is way more qualified to be on the Supreme Court than any of the Republicans are qualified to be in the Senate.
