Show Up for Democracy
Big news that the mainstream media is barely covering because they’ve been too busy covering a shortage of baby formula which Fox News has stretched into immigrants getting all the formula while our babies go without: The DOJ launched a grand jury investigation into Trump’s mishandling of classified information (the 15 boxes he stole.) They want to know if there was corrupt intent. Who boxed them up and did they know they were packing classified information? Who ordered them to do it? How were the top secret documents stored? Were they mishandled? The investigation has happened in “recent days.” The DOJ has been making requests of the National Archives for months which means they’re investigating more than Trump stealing classified information. This should alleviate the concerns that the doubters and skeptics have had about Merrick Garland doing anything about Trump. He is.
The Select Committee has subpoenaed five Republican members of Congress. The House Ethics Committee is the only other committee that has ever subpoenaed members of Congress. The five members are: House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Scott Perry, Jim Jordan, Mo Brooks, and Andy Biggs. They were asked to come in voluntarily in January but they never did. When they were asked for comment they all said they needed to meet amongst themselves first before they respond (in other words they want to get their stories straight.) They’ll be no-shows, for sure. Showing up for democracy is not why they’re in Congress.
Joe Biden has approved the release of 8 more batches of documents from the National Archives to the Select Committee. The committee has read 23,000 emails and attachments, 125,000 documents, and followed up on 470 tips. They’ve conducted 995 depositions so far. They don’t need the testimony of the five Republicans, they just want it on record that they were no-shows when their country needed them the most.
Inflation went down so now the Republicans are back at the border. They held a press conference where they invited the former Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Mark Morgan to scare the shit out of white people. “There are rapists, there are murderers, there are pedophiles, there are aggravated felons, there are gang members!” And they’re all coming for YOU!
Even though the Select Committee and the Department of Justice are investigating an attempted coup by Trump and the Republicans, half of the country has no idea what’s really going on and they’re not interested. That only benefits the Republicans. Fascism slithers in when people aren’t looking. As long as that many people are apathetic and disconnected, they stand a better chance of carrying out their plan to take complete control of our precious democracy. They’ve been playing a long game. For decades they have been successfully dumbing down the electorate, taking rights away, beating people down and over working them, redrawing congressional district maps, packing the courts with conservative judges, and demonizing Democrats by starting various culture wars to get people emotionally charged up so they’ll vote against their own best interests. This is the moment they’ve been waiting for. They have arrived. The Trump administration was a stress test on democracy. They know now what works and what doesn’t insofar as making the transition to authoritarianism. People can’t buy into the “both sides are the same” rhetoric just because they’re exhausted, frustrated and disappointed. Both sides are NOT the same. Democracy is slow and propaganda is fast. The Dems have been very busy passing legislation that would save democracy and improve the lives of everybody, but those bills have been shot down in the corrupt Senate. The Dems should have the majority but they don’t because of the filibuster which keeps the House bills from ever going to a vote, and two Democrats who are really Republicans because they’ve been bought off by special interests. We need to elect more Democrats. Our only hope is for citizens to vote for Democrats in numbers too big to dispute. If the Dems don’t win in November and 2024, it could be all over the great American experiment.
Democracy is the rarest, most fragile form of government and its under threat everywhere. With the war in Ukraine showing the world what’s at stake if democracy is destroyed, the recent news that the Supreme Court is going to take constitutional rights away from half of the country, and the Select Committee about to go public with what they’ve discovered in the past few months, people better get interested and clear their calendars to watch all of the televised hearings. They must show up at the polls in November to vote for Democrats up and down the ballot. Send money to candidates, get others registered to vote. That’s the very least every single American can do to save their own country. The midterms will be a vote for or against democracy. It’s that simple and that consequential.
Democracy is hard. It’s a slow creep to get things done because decisions are made by many on behalf of the majority. Autocracy is easy and fast because everything is decided by a small group or one person who are the only beneficiaries of their own decisions.
Democracy is fragile and delicate. Everybody has a duty to help take care of it.
Right now humanity is in a fight between autocracy and democracy, all over the world.
